Connexion

Why wouldn’t you switch to Connexion?!
Well, what do you know! Now that Xfinity and Century-Link have competition they have decided to try and not be so despicable. Remember how we were treated when they had us right where they wanted us, with no alternatives? And don’t forget all those good times when Century-Link was Qwest and Xfinity was Comcast. I have assembled some of their Greatest Hits!

  • Ever been told by a recording to find help and options online when your internet doesn’t work?

  • Have you ever been left on hold forever, and then disconnected?

  • Does your price of internet seem arbitrary and you’ve hoped you got someone on the phone who gave you a good promotion that year?

  • Ever discover that your neighbor was paying $40/mo less for the same plan that you have?

  • Have you opened your bill and discovered expensive surprises?

  • Have you ever marveled at how many times you could be transferred to the wrong dept.?

  • Have you been gaslit that the problem was with your computer when it turned out to be the internet service?

  • Have you not been able to understand the support tech, or the sound quality was, well, like they were calling from India?

  • Have you been told that your crappy speeds with Century-Link were because you were not paying enough?

  • Have you ever felt treated like a mark?

  • Have you explained to someone exactly what is going on and then been transferred to someone who needed you to start your whole story from the beginning?

  • Have you been told one thing and the next time you called were told the complete opposite?

  • Have you been told that support doesn’t have the ability to call you back?

  • Is being “given the runaround,” an understatement?

  • Did your experience with support ever kinda ruin your evening and make you want a drink?

  • Have you found yourself taking an angry tone towards their inanimate robot voice menu?

  • Have you been sold services you don’t need because you are a senior and hoped you could trust the company you already pay too much?

  • Does your bill seem like a puzzle that only the company lawyers understand?

  • Have you ever felt like you were screwed and there was nothing you could do about it?

  • Did you ever realize that no matter how many hours on the phone, how badly they treated you, and how incompetent they were, that there was no accountability?

  • Have you ever calculated how much you would be willing to pay as long as you didn’t have spend the 2 hours to call support on the phone?

  • Is any of this coming back to you now?

  • Have you ever imagined the CEO of Xfinity or Century-Link sitting on their yacht and laughing at you? Just laughing and laughing.

Connexion internet in Fort Collins is a municipal service modeled after other municipal ISPs (internet service providers) to provide internet as a utility, meant to serve as many people in a community as reliably as possible. During the pandemic, the larger public learned that lots of families and kids didn't have the internet access we assumed everyone had because it is indispensable to modern life. As a utility, the hope is that there will be more local accountability, where you can go to a city council meeting and complain if there are ongoing problems with the service. People living in rural parts of Fort Collins have historically been told to take a flying leap when it didn't make financial sense for Xfinity and Century-Link to run lines to farm houses or distant businesses. Connexion hopes to serve people like a utility where fast, reliable internet is a right, independent of income.

Connexion:
-Has no data cap. If you have 3 or 4 humans streaming video in your house you can exceed this 1TB limit with Xfinity and Century-Link.
-Does not sell your internet activity to the highest bidder. Your data is private.
-Has their support office in Fort Collins, right there on Laporte Ave.
-No contracts
-No hospital pricing (meaning whatever they can get out of you).

Watch this! Without looking, I can tell you the exact price right now!
Starting May 1, 2023, $70/mo. whether you bring your own wifi router or use theirs, Bam!
$20/mo. if you qualify for their digital equity program, Ba Bam!
Your speed? Is not “up to” any random number their marketing dept. makes up. It’s 1 gigabit (1000 Mbps), faster than you’ll ever need, probably for the remainder of your life. Most households won’t need speeds more than 50 Mbps.

I went to some of the early Connexion meetings with the local Fort Collins citizen geeks. They were a group of people who cared deeply about building the internet infrastructure and capacity for the future of Fort Collins. Will it be a success? Will it fulfill the dream? We don’t know yet. But for my customers and I, it was better than Century-Link and Xfinity on day one. I have used it since Aug. 2022 and it has been up and working the whole time. Otherwise, I have no relationship with Connexion, but I do believe in the concept.

On April 1st, 2023, I got a notice that internet is now $70/mo. whether you own your own wifi router or not. Not happy about this, especially after buying my own router to save the monthly rental fee. If you are typical user, now I recommend just using the wifi built into the device that comes with Connexion service. I think $70/mo is pushing what the limits of what you should be paying for internet. I will, however, remind myself of the unredeemable way Xfinity and Century-Link treated us before they had to become less horrible because of competition from Connexion.
